A Comic Genius
The last few weeks, you have been saying the FUNNIEST stuff. Here are a few:
"I love you dad. You're a fresh tomato."
"You're my great good friend."
After sobbing in your bed for an hour one night before bedtime because you didn't want to go to sleep, Daddy finally went in to settle you down. The conversation went like this:
D: "Noelle, what's the problem?"
N: **tears stop immediately** "Member? hee hee hee member when Chompers ate the apple and Chance didn't???"
D: "Yes, I remember, now go to sleep!!"

In like a lion, out like a lamb
Tonight is a bittersweet night for me. We have only one week left together until you are completely weaned. We are down to one night feeding and it's one of my favorite parts of the day. It's our time to share a special bond, one that will only last for a short while longer. And while I know that it's time to let go, my heart aches because I know it's your first step towards being independent. No longer will you rely on me to provide for you as only a momma can.
Letting go doesn't come easy for me and this is no exception. I am comforted knowing that the last year has had it's ups and downs with nursing, but I have stuck with it and provided you with the best possible start a baby boy could have.
Our nursing experience hasn't always been the textbook definition of breast feeding. In fact, the beginning months were nothing short of a nightmare. Perhaps those months was a pay back compliments of Karma for me being so cocky. I already went through a tough beginning of nursing with Noelle, as most first moms do. This time, I had not a care in the world. I mean, I'd already been there, done that and so how tough could it possibly be. I'd imagine it'd be like riding a bike...once you learn...you know how it goes.
Boy was I wrong.
Breastfeeding you came in a like a lion. Or like deadly fire breathing dragon who had no mercy for any of us involved-- who's main purpose in life was to push me to the brink of insanity and take the whole family down with me.
It all started when we found out you were tongue-tied shortly after birth. Dr So & So, the pediatrician who was doing the rounds on your birthday, came in and upon peering into your mouth proclaimed you were tongue-tied and would need to have a minor surgery to fix it. How dare she tell me you had a flaw!
It didn't help that I immediately got defensive.
It didn't help that she had the personality of a dead fish.
And it probably didn't help that I stated this fact out loud.
And it definitely didn't help that she heard me.
You had other things to get clipped on your agenda, you didn't need to worry about your tongue too. But alas, we had the surgery done. We couldn't chance our nursing experience to be cut short, or for you to have a speech impediment.
What Dr. Dead Fish failed to tell me was that after the tongue got clipped, it would no longer sit on the bottom of your mouth. Instead it would stick to the roof of your mouth, which you know, make nursing about in-freaking-possible. You see, to be able to nurse, you've got to get the tongue out and under. That's the only way. And I'm sorry that by the time you are old enough to read this, this post may scar you for life (ya, it's about to get graphic, so family and friends, read on with caution).
Anyways, I didn't found out a life-saving tip until we were 4 weeks in and my nipples were red, cracked, and bleeding. Much worse than anything I ever dealt with nursing Noelle. I would cry, and cry, and cry and dread every single nursing session. I would flinch and dig my heels in the ground. I scoured every breastfeeding book I owned, every internet site, and every message board I belonged to. I bought every single cream and product available to help and nothing did.
So, finally I got the nerve to go in to see a lactation consultant ( abbreviated LC). You see, I'm not one for asking for help. Ever. And when it comes something of a private nature, you can bet your ass I'm not going to shout from the rooftops that I need help. I was a second time mom for chrissake, I wasn't about to march in, whip out my boobs, and announce my failures to a total stranger.
That visit saved the future of our nursing relationship. I was so nervous going in that I was in tears. The lady was so wonderful and understanding. She told me all about your tongue and why we couldn't get the latch right. With her guidance, you latched on perfectly. I remember wincing getting ready to cry in her office, but the latch was p.e.r.f.e.c.t. No pain. Nothing. I think I cried again (hey back off, post partum is an emotional time). I think I asked her if she could move in with me so we could get the perfect latch at home too. And Daddy had enough grace not to remind me that had I not been so stubborn, and went in a week ago when he suggested, we could have avoided a lot of pain.
She told me that we would have to do tongue exercises to train your tongue to work like normal. We had to do these exercises before every feeding and as the next few days went on, things got better. Now, I don't know why the &*$@ Dr. Dead Fish couldn't have give me a heads up 4 weeks ago, but don't worry, I ripped her a new one in the survey the hospital sent us.
Then the puking and screaming started.
A few days later, you started puking after every feeding. Not spitting up... full-on vomiting. I had to go buy more bibs because we couldn't keep up with the laundry. You would crunch up your legs, writhe in pain and scream and puke non-stop.
Once again, I scoured every book I owned, every internet site, and every message board I belonged to. I found out I had a forceful let down and an oversupply. To put your nursing sessions into perspective, it was like an adult trying to take a drink from a fire hose. Lots of choking and gagging and drama.
Well, we figured that was the problem, so I called back up the LC and got some tips on how to regulate my supply. However, as the supply slowed down, the puking and screaming sped up at a breakneck speed. We visited our pediatrician and talked about options: colic, gas, etc., all of which I knew it was not. It wasn't until your poop started to have blood in it that we started thinking food allergy.
Long story short, we found out you had a dairy/soy allergy. I changed my diet, which was incredibly difficult for me since I love my dairy; I have been know to eat an entire brick of cheese in one sitting. Combined with the fact that soy is in everything, and I hate cooking, it made for a near impossible situation.
My frozen supply that I worked so hard for was now null and void. I blogged a while back about what I ended up doing with all the frozen milk you couldn't drink. You can read about it at the link here: http://adayinthehunthouse.blogspot.com/2009/07/1489.html
(The donation almost didn't happen because my blood test came back positive for HVLT, some crazy disorder that people in third world countries get. After seeing two doctors, including an infectious disease doctor, I got re-tested and it was negative. A month worth of worrying and tests and dr. visits for a false positive. And the word infectious is just as about skin crawling as it gets. You need to be referred to the infectious disease doctor, oh you're here to see the infectious disease doctor? the infectious disease doctor will see you shortly. Please People. For the love of God, STOP saying the goddamn word INFECTIOUS.)
You see, "in like a lion" doesn't do the first 4 months of nursing justice. But we didn't quit. And now, in one short week we will be done. It was worth every tear, every puked on bib, every sleepless night, every doctor's visit and every minute of craziness.
I will enjoy the next few peaceful nights with you Ty. On Feb. 3rd I will be crying for a different reason. And even though nursing came in like a lion, it's definitely going out like a lamb: peaceful and perfect.
I love you baby boy,
Mommy

Full Hands, Full Heart
There's no doubt that with the last two months, my hands have been full, but so is my heart. I have hardly had time to sit down and catch my breath, let alone get on here and blog about our daily festivities. It's gonna take a while to catch back up....
Well, I'm signing off for now. I can't seem to get more pics loaded right now...could have something to do with my camera that hasn't been charged in a week, but I'll have to investigate when sleep isn't calling. I will try to get a few catch-up posts written in the next few days, complete with Halloween pictures, and of the Christmas fun we've been having!
I love you both!

Brown Bear, Brown Bear
One of the things I really hope to instill in you is a love for reading and I think we are on the right track. You get super excited when we go to the library and have a blast bringing back the old books and picking out new ones. You are always trying to get us to read "one more please" or keep reading for "just two more minutes".
We have read and re-read your collection of books so many times that you have a few of them memorized. I happened to sneak up on you and Ty in the hallway today and you were reading him Brown Bear, Brown Bear:
All was going well until you said " gorange oldfish" and I started laughing. You caught me with the camera and got camera shy shortly after, but these impromptu reading sessions with Ty are happening more and more and I think it's the cutest thing! You're such a good reader AND a good big sister!
I love you little girl,

Dark in here!
Had to share the conversation we just had:
You: "Mom, I dropped my nigh-nigh"
Me: "Okay, you can get out of bed and get it."
***you rummage around for a good minute***
You: "Ummmm, mom....it's pretty dark in here." (with the tone of voice that was really saying, DUH, how the heck am I supposed to find anything in the pitch black, can you get off your butt and help me out in here or what.
I love you,
Mommy
Why would you do that?
Tonight we had a great dinner: homemade Italian beef, cucumbers fresh from our garden and french fries. You accidentally knocked your spoon on the floor and as I went to go grab it, you threw a hunk of meat at me. What the heck would possess you to do that? Needless to say, you landed in time out. When I asked you why you would do that, you said, "Cause it's funny!"
Of course.
We then headed out for a bike ride and you can now FLY on your little bike. At one point I was running with Ty to catch up to you, and as you kept going faster and faster, I couldn't help but think of how much your bike riding parallels your growing independence. You are getting to be such a big girl and are a wonderful help (when you're not pelting me with food). I love how your personality is so unique and even when you are testing the limits, I never forget how lucky I am to be your mommy.
When we got home, we started to fill up the tub for bath time. You came up to me, hugged my neck and said, "Mom, I love you. You're my friend."
You're my friend too, baby girl, and I love you infinity!!
Love,
Mommy

Vacation Part 1
Either way, it worked out just fine. Mapquest put us there in 6 hours, and we made it up in about 8.5. The kids did awesome and the stars aligned for us so that we only had to stop a few times and got everything done at each stop (diaper changes, potty breaks, nursing, lunch, gas)... unlike the dreaded 3 hour-turned-6 hour- trip to St. Louis down to Stacy and Hari's where we lucky enough to make individual stops for the above mentioned needs.

So THIS is how it works...
As I'm sure any two year old mom does, I have been working a lot with you on sharing. Ty is getting to the age where he is interested in toys and every now and then he gets ahold of one of yours. Without fail, you immediately want whatever it is he has. Even if it's a toy that hasn't made it's way out of the bottom of the toy basket in over a year. Doesn't matter. Then a nice long talk ensues on how you have to share with Ty, etc. etc. We usually end the battle with you finding another toy to exchange with Ty's cool one.
So, today, I was getting some of the old baby toys I had packed up from when you were itty-bitty and cleaning them off for Ty. I gave him this ball popper thing and once you noticed a "new" toy in the room, came over to me and said, "Hey mom, can I share with Ty?".
A breakthrough! Great! Finally, all the sharing talk we've been doing has finally paid off. Now you and your little brother are starting to co-exist peacefully and they can just mail me my mother of the year medal!
Or not.
Once I said, "Noelle, that's a great idea! Sharing with Ty is a very nice thing to do!" You walked right over to him, snatched the toy from his hand and proceeded to ball pop around the house while poor Ty was still trying to process what happened.
Ah, so this is how your little mind thinks sharing works. Guess we have some more work to do, huh?
Love,
Mommy

SO COOL
When your Uncle Dave and I get together, we usually end up laughing hysterically at some point. It doesn't take much to get us going, be it a one-line zinger from him, remembering a funny old story, or just recalling bits of our favorite movie, Dumb and Dumber. Whatever the case, a dose of laugh-so-hard-your-abs-hurt always leaves me thankful for such an awesome brother. In fact, just the other day we were talking on the phone about his internship and he made some off-hand comment which had me in tears. Neither one of us was talking, just laughing and he has the type of laugh that is contagious....you just keep laughing harder and longer until you can get yourself under control (kinda drives your Grandma nuts, lol).
Anyways, the point of this post.
You two can get each other laughing the same way. The best is in the car, Noelle starts making funny faces or funny noises, and the next thing you know, Ty is laughing and soon enough you are just laughing at each other laughing, kinda like me and uncle Dave. It's the coolest thing to watch and even though some days it gets a little crazy around here, I love knowing that you two have each other and are going to be the best of friends!!
Love,
Mommy

The Next American Idol
Did you know you have the most beautiful voice? You have been singing since March, but you get so camera shy every time I try to record you. Your favorite song to sing is Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. I love how soft your voice gets and the way I can tell you are really thinking about what it is you are singing. You always make me smile and I especially like the way your tone fluctuates. You have a few kid CD's in the car and know all the words to the songs. The ABC's, Goodnight - Sleep tight, Baa Baa Black Sheep, Mulberry Bush, and I Like to Bounce are just a few of your current favorites....sometimes you even like to blend two songs together. Here you are in action, singing the ABC's and Twinkle Twinkle. Oh, and the best is when you get to the L-M-N-O-P part....
I love you baby girl!

A Month of Firsts
You are now able to sit up on your own (and have been since July 17th!!)....
You started rice cereal on July 23rd and while you LOVED it, it did not love you. You puked and then were up half the night crying and having stomach pains. So, we waited a bit longer and re-introduced it with smaller amounts and you've handled it fine so far. You are also eating bananas, applesauce and peaches right now. We tried carrots, but they didn't love you either. I can hardly get any pictures of you eating because you start yelling and fussing if the food isn't coming at a rapid rate. Here is a video clip:
We also had our first positive park experience. You've been before but have not enjoyed it until now. The swings used to scare you, now you love them! You are so stinkin' cute....
You also started working on drinking from the sippy cup....
You went to your first baseball game on August 2nd. We were up in Traverse City, MI and went to see the Beach Bums. You had fun at the game.....
